In Search of Marcel Proust: The Life and Work of a Literary Legend

Thursday, October 19th 12:00 – 14:00 (EST)

Join us for a two-hour masterclass on Marcel Proust, one of the greatest literary voices of the twentieth century, guided by Professor William Carter, author of the definitive biography Marcel Proust: A Life. In the first hour, we will explore Proust’s life and times, examining his character, development as an artist, and his passionate attachment to his mother, his deep love for the scenes of his youth, his flirtation with Parisian high society, his complicated sexual desires, and his irrevocable commitment to literary truth. In the second part, we will drill down on his masterpiece, In Search of Lost Time, exploring its themes, characters, and structure.

This masterclass will provide a deep dive into the life and work of one of the most important writers of the modern era. Whether you are a seasoned Proustian or a newcomer to his writing, this masterclass is the perfect opportunity to explore Proust’s world, and gain a new appreciation for his enduring legacy.

The webinar will include a 10-minute break and two Q&A sessions. Participants will receive a handout and will also get a chance to submit a question in advance.

William C. Carter is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of French at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His biography Marcel Proust: A Life was selected as a “Notable Book of 2000” by The New York Times. Harold Bloom has written that Carter is “Proust’s definitive biographer” and that his more recent book, Proust in Love, is “a marvelous study of the comic splendor of the great novelist’s vision of human Eros and its discontents.” He co-produced the award-winning documentary film Marcel Proust: A Writer’s Life. In 2013, Yale University Press published a new edition of the biography and began publishing a revised, annotated edition of Scott Moncrieff’s distinguished translation of In Search of Lost Time. That same year William Carter received the Médaille d’Or du Mérite Francophone from the American Delegation of La Renaissance Française.
