Over 60 years of experience

Gîtes de France was established in the 1950s as a response to the decline of rural France following World War II. Its founder, Emile Aubert, envisioned a way to revive the struggling rural economy by promoting tourism in lesser-known regions. By converting existing farmhouses, cottages, and manor houses into comfortable lodgings, he sought to offer visitors an authentic glimpse into the French countryside. City folk could experience living in the countryside, while villages saw the houses and buildings restored. Today, Gîtes de France has evolved into a nationwide network comprising over 56,000 properties, encompassing a diverse range of accommodations that cater to all types of travellers.

One of the key aspects that sets Gîtes de France apart is its rigorous quality assurance process. Each property in the network undergoes a thorough evaluation to ensure it meets the organization’s high standards. The classification system, ranging from one to five “épis” (ears of wheat), denotes the level of comfort and amenities available at each accommodation.

Living like a local

Gîtes de France advocates “a tourism of authenticity, friendliness, nature, calm, discovery and space”, ensuring a more sustainable approach to travelling, providing local jobs and developing the drawing power of each destination.

Staying at a Gîtes de France accommodation offers travellers an experience that often eludes those confined to mainstream hotels. The network’s properties are located in picturesque settings, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, tranquil villages, and charming towns. From cozy cottages with crackling fireplaces to stately manor houses with sprawling gardens, each Gîte emanates a sense of warmth and character.

Many hosts are proud custodians of their regions, eager to share their knowledge and love for the area. They offer insider tips on nearby attractions, traditional festivals, and local gastronomy, immersing guests in the cultural tapestry of rural France and an engaging stay within the local community.

Flexibility and variery

Gîtes de France caters to diverse preferences, offering a wide range of accommodations suitable for solo travellers, families, and large groups alike. From romantic cottages for couples to spacious farmhouses for family reunions, the network provides an array of options. Guests can choose between self-catering gîtes or opt for a bed and breakfast experience but there are also ‘city break’ options listing urban properties or, on the flip-side, rural campsites for an outdoorsy stay.

Additionally, Gîtes de France embraces sustainable tourism practices, with many properties incorporating eco-friendly initiatives. From energy-efficient appliances to locally sourced produce, these accommodations prioritize minimizing their environmental footprint while ensuring guests enjoy a comfortable stay.

In fact, you can filter your search by selecting their ‘themed stays’. Take your pick among ‘écogîtes’, Panda WWF accommodations (located within protect natural areas), work from home locations, ‘Bienvenu à la ferme’ for an unforgettable stay on a working farm, places that are ideal for gardening, fishing, wellness, skiing, cycling, horse riding, hiking, golfing…the choice is endless and ensures visitors the perfect holiday in France.

Great article Sophie. We love the Gites de France. We discovered them on our first trip in 1996 and have been using them ever since. We've stayed on a sheep farm, a truffle farm, a genuine chateau we had all to ourselves, a thatched house in a regional nature area and lots of lovely village and country homes. One of the best part of Gites de France is meeting the property owners. They have all been kind and friendly and very helpful. I highly recommend them and hope many take your article to heart. Thank you for writing it.
