Megève

Megève, in Haute-Savoie, offers a world of skiing more suitable for epicurian skiers than sporty skiers.

With its two ski areas spread over four mountain ranges (Mont d’Arbois with the history of the Rothschild family, Rochebrune with the first cable-car for skiers in France, Cote 2000 and Le Jaillet) and accessible from the centre of the village, this is a unique terrain with sunlit pastures and snow-laden forests, perfect for skiers from all over the world, whatever their favoured pastime. With 400km of slopes and 45km of cross-country trails, it is the ideal ski resort for all the family.

Make your stay extra memorable with a First Track ski touring expedition at sunrise. If you have little ones, they’ll love the L’Ours des Prés, a fun area for young skiers with games and challenges to have fun while developing your skiing skills. And for thrill seekers, a mini Kilometre Throw allows you to speed in all legitimacy and safety!

Make those legs burn with a spot of mountain biking in the snow or enjoy the last lights in the evening on a snowshoe walk. On arrival, the reward is a Savoyard aperitif in an igloo by candlelight.

For a change of pace, why not take a guided visit and learn about the history and architecture of Megève? Or visit one of the many artisans in the village, such as the Joly-Pottuz family who make the Croix de Megève in gold and silver plating.

Whatever your preferences in terms of accommodation, Megève will have something to delight you – apartment, hotel, chalet, you can find something to suit a budget or dial the luxury all the way up. Whatever you choose, you are guaranteed to be cosy. Many establishments have spas for that next-level relaxation experience or indulge in a Sunrise Fitness session to start your day serenely, or a Sunset Yoga/Stretching Afterski session, the perfect way to end the day.

Eat, Sleep, Relax

It’s no secret – Megève’s restaurant scene is huge: it has 135 restaurants. In 1946, Megève was the first French resort to add fondue to a restaurant menu; enjoy it today at the restaurant of the M de Megève, where affineur and fromager Hubert Thuet will create a fondue especially for you, using the best local cheese and an exciting choice of dipping treats.

October saw the return of Toquicimes under the patronage of multi-starred chef Yannick Alléno. The popular annual festival offers workshops for all, culinary masterclasses and demonstrations, a producers‘ market, competitions open to professionals and amateurs alike: Chartreuse Relais Desserts chocolate tart, best mountain pâté… And, of course, in Megève, fondue is no laughing matter. It’s even the subject of a competition reserved for the village’s restaurateurs, which returns every year at Toquicimes. The candidate who comes out on top has the honour and privilege of adding the ‘Best Fondue in Megève’ to their menu for the year.

New this season, chef Marc Veyrat returns to his first love, conjuring up memories of his childhood in the countryside through ‘High Definition Cuisine’. Established just a stone’s throw from the village in an intimate cocoon with the feel of a family home, he orchestrates an immersive dinner for up to 18 guests. It’s a truly experiential experience, an introduction to the flavours and herbs of the mountains. His wife Christine Heckler Veyrat, who is also a chef, cooks in the hearth, mastering flames, embers, ash and smoke.

Also new for 2024/5, three-star chef Emmanuel Renaut takes over Le Prieuré, offering unique experiences based on mountain culinary expertise. A new chapter is opening up for this emblematic establishment in the centre of the village, which has been run by the same family for three generations. In a bistro atmosphere, you can enjoy authentic dishes based on local produce. The menu changes with the seasons, from the chef’s signature fondue to lake fish and a fine selection of local cheeses. There’s a daily breakfast option to get the day off to a good start, and the Prieuré menu (starter, main course, dessert) at €40.

Open daily from 9am to 11pm.

You can also visit the Cheese Factory at the Grand Hôtel du Soleil d’Or, a restaurant dedicated to local cheeses, simply called La Fromagerie. On the menu is a vast selection of cheeses from the Alps, each chosen for its uniqueness and quality, reflecting the expertise of local farmers. The hotel invites you to sample these products in a meticulously designed setting that combines Alpine authenticity with contemporary elegance. It’s a warm, intimate place that’s very much in the hotel’s DNA.

Tours of the cheese dairy are also organised in partnership with the farmers. A gourmet invitation to discover the art of Alpine cheese-making.

Open every day from 7pm to 10pm.

Environment

Megève has an excellent track record when it comes to supporting the environment and bears the Flocon Vert. An example of this commitment to sustainability is the recent refurbishment of the Palais Megève, using renewable energy, a hydroelectric turbine and heat pumps. Heat generated by the ice-rink’s refrigeration systems is recovered and used to heat water for the indoor and outdoor pools.
