The Musée de l’Homme in Paris brings together history, science and art to explore the fascinating and mysterious world of mummies in a new exhibition. In a western world where the deceased body is increasingly hidden away and death is often experienced in private, mummies directly challenge our relationship with memory. The exhibition delves into who these individuals were in their societies, their lives before death, and the meanings their preservation held, and how museum practices have evolved to respect human dignity during display. Visitors are challenged to confront cultural taboos about death and the body while scientific studies using modern medical imaging and biochemistry help reconstruct their lives and societies.
