Couriot-Musée de la Mine

Couriot-Musée de la Mine in Saint-Étienne is a unique site dedicated to the city’s industrial heritage. Here, the machinery fell silent in 1973, when the miners left, yet their presence is still deeply felt throughout the former mining complex and its vast surrounding landscape. Housed in the original mine buildings, now listed as Historic Monuments, the museum allows visitors to discover the machines, trades, and daily lives of the miners, while appreciating the scale of underground work.

A powerful symbol of Saint-Étienne’s coal mining history, the site is marked by its two slag heaps and headframe overlooking the city. Today, Couriot is also a lively public space, featuring a footbridge and a park ideal for walking, relaxing, and spending time with friends or family.
