Ligne Maginot – Fort de Schoenenbourg

Ligne Maginot – Fort de Schoenenbourg

The Fort de Schoenenbourg, an Exceptional Witness to the Maginot Line

Situated in the heart of Northern Alsace, the Fort de Schoenenbourg is one of the best-preserved structures of the Maginot Line. A veritable underground town dug almost 30 metres deep, it stretches over more than 3 kilometres of galleries and bears witness to the ingenuity of French military architecture in the 1930s.

Spared despite intense bombing in 1940, the fort remains an emblematic site of the Second World War. Thanks to the dedicated work of volunteers from the Association des Amis de la Ligne Maginot d’Alsace (AALMA), it has now been restored, maintained and opened to the public.

Visitors discover an exceptional heritage site, original technical installations, the soldiers’ living quarters, and a unique immersion into the daily life of the garrison. Throughout the year, the Fort de Schoenenbourg also offers guided tours, cultural events and themed activities, presenting history in a way that is both engaging and accessible to all.

More than simply a historic site, the Fort de Schoenenbourg is a place of memory, of transmission and of discovery, where the past sheds light on our understanding of the contemporary world.
