Mémorial de Caen
The Mémorial de Caen is one of the largest contemporary museums in Europe, offering a striking and deeply human immersion into the history of the 20th century and the Second World War. It is an essential visit for anyone wishing to understand D-Day and the Second World War within their regional and global context. High-quality staging and documents, combined with a clear timeline, guide visitors through a dense journey where each stage — causes, conflicts, the Holocaust, the Resistance and the Liberation — is recounted with precision. Emotional impact and educational value go hand in hand: the site invites reflection and remembrance, prompting powerful moments and a profound awareness. The visit is a highly enriching experience for both teenagers and adults. The LEGACY ROADS tours of the D-Day landing beaches, narrated by passionate guides, add a vivid, moving dimension that leaves a lasting impression on visitors. A respectful and profoundly human place of remembrance, the Mémorial de Caen is a must-see museum on your tour of Normandy.

The origins of the Mémorial
On 6 June 1944, a young Red Cross volunteer made his way through the ruins of Caen to rescue the wounded buried beneath the rubble. Having become mayor of the city and a senator, Jean-Marie Girault was, in the 1980s, the driving force behind the Mémorial de Caen. Together with others, he founded the Association des Amis du Musée Mémorial (Friends of the Memorial Museum Association) in 1981, which undertook significant work gathering memories and laid the foundations for the future museum. Construction began in 1986 under the direction of Caen architect Jacques Millet, and the Mémorial was inaugurated on 6 June 1988 by President François Mitterrand. On its white Caen-stone façade, marked by the scars of war, a line by the Caen-born poet Paul Dorey reads: “Pain broke me, fraternity lifted me up, and from my wound sprang a river of freedom.”
