Housed in an elegant private mansion dating from the 16th and 18th centuries, this museum explores the life and work of the writer within the context of the Age of Enlightenment. A man of wide-ranging curiosity, both intelligent and open-minded, and deeply attuned to the issues of his time, Denis Diderot played a major role in the intellectual revolution that shaped the 18th century.
A philosopher and encyclopaedist, as well as a novelist, playwright and art critic, Denis Diderot encountered several leading figures of his era, including Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Catherine II of Russia. The museum highlights the many facets of his personality, his complex relationship with his hometown and family, his major contribution to the Encyclopédie, and his artistic tastes.
