Superb seafood, wonderful sightseeing, and slow tourism par excellence, a cycling trip around the Étang de Thau, in the Hérault, has it all.
The literal meaning of étang in French is ‘pond’. But the Étang/Bassin de Thau on the coast of Hérault, is rather more than that. At 7,500 hectares, it’s the largest saltwater lagoon in the Occitanie region. It also offers some of the best shellfish in the south of France and much more besides.
Getting around it is easy enough by car, but nothing beats a bike, especially as the 35-mile Tour de l’Étang de Thau is very easy on the legs. If you want to cover it comfortably in a day, though, an e-bike might be the better option.
