French Film Review: La Nouvelle Femme

This fictionalised biopic of famous educator Maria Montessori introduces us to Lili d’Alengy, a (fictional) famous Parisian darling with a shameful secret – a daughter with a disability, Tina, whom she needs to hide in order to protect her career. Unwilling and unable to care for Tina, Lili seeks help from Maria Montessori, a doctor who is developing a teaching method for children labelled as “idiotic”. But Maria also has a secret – a child born out of wedlock, and soon she’ll be forced to choose between her career and her child. The two women go on to help each other eam their place in a man’s world – and make history.

Director: Léa Todorov
