New at the Carrières des Lumières: Time of the Pharaohs
The latest exhibition-show at the Carrières des Lumières, in Les Baux-de-Provence, takes visitors on an epic journey back to ancient Egypt, in the footsteps of the great Pharaohs.
Step back in time and rediscover Egypt at the time of the Pharaohs through the masterpieces of this mythical civilisation spanning three millennia. With epic projections on a former quarry and expert animation and sound, the remains of ancient Egypt are revealed as they first appeared to the explorers in the campaign of 1798, who wrote: “We are people of dwarfs visiting a nation of giants”.
The journey follows the sacred River Nile to unveil gigantic construction sites and legends of ancient architecture. The pyramids are built before your eyes, block by block, guarded by the majestic Sphinx. Monumental sculptures of sovereigns whose names resonate in history then take over the space: Khafre, Hatshepsut, Thutmose III, Akhenaten and Nefertiti. Mythical battles punctuate the reigns of successive sovereigns, such as Ramses II and the Battle of Kadesh, and the journey comes to an end as you are led into the afterlife, having revealed only a tiny part of the fascinating land of ancient Egypt, where there are still so many mysteries to explore.
