1. CATHÉDRALE SAINTE-MARIE

This behemoth dominates the Auch skyline from afar, while up-close its epic, style-spanning architectural magnificence combines with interior riches. Arnaud de Moles’ resplendent and perfectly preserved – stained-glass windows are a sight to behold.

2. MONUMENTAL STAIRCASE

Created in order to allow residents to pass twixt the old town and lower new town, this grand series of steps behind the cathedral provides the perfect opportunity to have your photo taken with Gascony’s most celebrated figure, Charles de Batz de Castelmore aka the mousquetoire D’Artagnan.

3. MEMENTO

The hitherto spiritual calm of a former Carmelite convent, and latterly the departmental archive, has today given way to an eclectic array of cerebral, thought-provoking art installations at the newly- opened Memento, Espace Départemental d’Art Contemporain. The current temporary exhibition, Union Libre’, runs until October.

An eclectic museum that houses works and objets d’art spanning centuries and geography, with a speciality in South American pieces. Until the end of the year, the museum is hosting a brilliant exhibition covering 60 years of Peruvian photography “presenting a more modern image of a country attached to its historical roots”.

5. LE SQUARE JÉRÔME CUZIN

A haven of tranquillity in the heart of the old town. this Jardin Remarquable in the grounds of a chapel- turned-cultural centre features a dry garden, a play area for kids and species including a large-flowered Magnolia, Japanese maple, chestnut and palm tree.
