Carmen: Opéra en Plein Air

Georges Bizet’s beloved opera, Carmen, which premiered at Paris’s Opéra Comique in 1875, has taken to the road this summer and is being performed outdoors at some of France’s most beautiful historic sites. Opéra en Plein Air, a unique summer festival that puts on one well-known opera every year, has chosen Carmen for its tenth anniversary show. Decors and costumes are lavish, and the cast is composed of up-and-coming young singers. This year’s four-month tour began in June and continues until the end of September.

September 3-4, 2010: Château de Haroué, a turreted 18th-century château 12 miles south of Nancy (Lorraine). €44-79

September 17-18, 2010: Abbey of Mont Saint Michel, on an offshore island between Normandy and Brittany. €45-79

September 23-25, 2010: Château de Fontainebleau, a 16th-century royal castle 40 miles southeast of Paris. €47-79
