French Film Review: Slalom, Directed by Charlène Favier

Charlène Favier’s debut feature is a stark and uncompromising examination of sexual abuse set against the backdrop of the French Alps. Fifteen-year-old Lyz Lopez (Noée Abita) is a promising skiing star who attends a residential programme for high-school athletes run by the predatory Fred (Jérémie Renier) and his girlfriend, Lilou.

Talented, and made vulnerable by her single-minded determination to succeed on the slopes, Lyz is keen to impress her mentor, unaware that his interest in her strays way beyond the professional. At times hard to watch, the film delves with delicacy into the confusion experienced by a minor suffering abuse at the hands of a trusted role model. Chillingly brilliant.

Director: Charlène Favier
Starring: Noée Abita, Jérémie Renier
