Book Reviews: Brigitte Bardot, My Life in Fashion

Was there a ‘style Bardot’? Not according to the legendary movie star herself, who says in a foreword to this lavish new 300-page book “Je n’ai été jamais à la mode” (“I was never fashionable”).

That’s hard to believe judging from the wonderful selection of fashion shoot images assembled, from the signature off-the-shoulder haute couture dresses of the ’50s to the relaxed hippy chic of the ’60s Saint-Tropez set, and finally to the free-flowing extravagant gypsy look she favoured before retiring from film and the public eye in the ’70s.

Yet, as you read the interviews with her friends and discover some of her own personal photos, it becomes clear that she was a free spirit who often simply chose the clothes she liked. Being Brigitte, the world soon took notice and, voilà! A new style was born. This book is a must-have addition to the bookshelf of any BB fan, as well as a captivating fashion photo journey through three infl uential decades.
