Experience the festivities in Les Sables-d’Olonne

Les Sables-d’Olonne, the picturesque port town and starting point of the race, comes alive with energy and excitement as the Vendée Globe approaches. In the run-up for the start day, the “Village du Vendée Globe” opens, where you can stroll along the harbor, admire the high-tech yachts, and perhaps even meet some of the racers. The Village is packed with exhibitions, activities, and interactive displays about the race’s history, oceanic navigation, and the technology that powers these world-class yachts. Book your access ticket here.

There’s a jam-packed program of events and activities (many of which are free) within the Village every day to get visitors in the mood for the start of the race, including conferences and exhibitions to virtual reality games. Here are some highlights

  • Visit a genuine Imoca boat that took part in 2 editions of the Vendée Globe.
  • Zipline down from the mast and rigging for a little dose of adrenaline.
  • Kids can pilot their own miniature sailing boat in a pool.
  • Meet the skippers and get an autograph.
  • Enjoy fresh oysters during a tasting.
  • DJ sets in the evenings to get your boogie on.

On the day of the departure: November 10th

On the day of the race start, Les Sables-d’Olonne transforms into a bustling festival. There are viewing areas along the coast, and large screens are set up to show the yachts as they head out to sea. Some of the best spots include:

  • Along the mythical Vendée Globe channel, either on the Chaume side or the port side  – get there early Sunday morning to secure a good view!
  • On the Sables d’Olonne Grande Plage, for a breathtaking view of the bay.
  • In the Village where you can see the skippers embrace their loved ones  before they set off.
  • Away from the hubbub of the town centre, a few strategic points will offer a good view of the boats: Tanchet, le Puits d’Enfer, Cayola, la Paracou, Sauveterre. Pro tip: bring binoculars!
  • Boat owners can also view the departure from the water and you could also book a spot on board a special passenger boat!

The atmosphere is electrifying, with cheering crowds and the thrill of seeing the sailors off on their grueling journey. Be sure to arrive early to secure a good viewing spot and soak in the excitement.

Watching from afar? If you’re in France, the departure is timed to fit with the mid-day news (13:02 UTC+1) so switch the TV on and enjoy the departure live on the news! Of course, the departure will also be broadcasted online: on the Vendée Globe website, Youtube channel and Facebook page.
