Official Recognition for Aquitaine’s Caviar
Aquitaine’s renowned caviar has been awarded a Protected Geographical Indication, which recognises the product’s specific regional origin and quality.
The designation ensures that only caviar produced in a defined geographical area, using established methods, can carry the ‘Caviar d’Aquitaine’ name.
Aquitaine is France’s leading region for farmed caviar, with six major producers collaborating over a period of 12 years to secure the PGI.
The new status not only protects the name from misuse but also enhances the product’s value on both national and international markets. For consumers, it means they are guaranteed ‘an authentic product that meets strict production standards. The PGI specifications include traceability, eco-friendly practices, fish densities that aren’t too high, no GMOs and no antibiotics.
France produces 50 tonnes of sturgeon eggs a year, compared with industry giant China, which produces 300 tonnes. Caviar farming in Aquitaine dates back to the 1920s when the region’s abundance of sturgeon gained value thanks to exiled Russians introducing the delicacy to Paris.
