Montreuil-sur-Mer: Froggy’s Tavern
Chefs Alexandre Gauthier and William Elliott have a high-jumping hit on their hands with Froggy’s Tavern, a terrific new restaurant in Montreuil-sur-Mer, just inland from the fashionable English Channel resort of Le Touquet. “We wanted to create a friendly, easygoing place for people to eat well and have a good time,” says Gauthier, who has won renown for his superb contemporary French cooking at Montreuil’s Le Grenouillère; Elliott is in command of the kitchens at Le Touquet’s delightful Hôtel Westminster. Their joint venture is a great-value tavern with exposed stone walls and a cheerful young staff. The menu changes regularly but much of what’s served is cooked on a rotisserie. Start with a hearty vegetable or endive soup, or a slice of pâté de campagne, and then choose from among the delicious spit-roasted main courses — beef, chicken, pork or fish. The short wine list has some great lesser-known bottles and is very fairly priced. It’s a great address for anyone planning a seaside weekend in Le Touquet.
