With a rich history of famous artists attracted by the bright, natural light, the Côte d’Azur is spoilt for exhibitions.

1. FONDATION MAEGHT

For 60 years, this centre in Saint-Paul de Vence has offered a mix of art, architecture and landscape gardens. Spot Giacometti’s cat sculpture, Miro’s Egg and a Calder mobile, plus works by Bonnard, Braque, Chagall, Léger and Miró.

2. FAMM

FAMM (Female Artists of the Mougins Museum), a private museum that celebrates women in the arts, opened in June 2024 and exhibits paintings, sculptures and photographs by women who have shaped artistic movements.

3. MUSÉE MATISSE

Henri Matisse spent his winters in Nice and it was here, in the Mediterranean light, that he painted some of his most colourful paintings. The museum is in a grand villa in Cimiez, in the north of the city.

4. MUSÉE NATIONAL MARC CHAGALL

Also in Cimiez is this museum, home to Chagall’s group of 17 paintings known as the Message Biblique, which he started in the 1950s and which cover Bible stories from Genesis to Exodus.

5. MUSÉE ESCOFFIER DE L’ART CULINAIRE

In Villeneuve-Loubet, visit the room where chef and culinary pioneer August Escoffier was bom in 1846, as well as his office, library and a whole room dedicated to the art of pâtisserie.

6. MUSÉE DE LA REINE VICTORIA

Just outside Hyères, this high-camp shrine to Queen Victoria. who came here in the 1890s, includes jewellery, porcelain, photos, paintings, memorabilia and a scary, life-sized mannequin.

7. MAMAC

Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Niki de Saint Phalle… with 1,300 works by more than 300 artists, the MAMAC showcases modern art from 1950 to the present day. Currently closed for renovation, it offers its collections externally.

8. LA CHAPELLE SAINT-PIERRE ‘COCTEAU’

In the 1950s. Jean Cocteau agreed to decorate Saint-Pierre Chapel, in Villefranche-sur-Mer Dedicated to local fishermen, it includes scenes inspired by local Mediterranean life and St Peter.

9. MUSÉE PICASSO

The Château Grimaldi in Antibes was Picasso’s studio in 1946 and now houses the paintings and other works he created here. “If you want to see the Picassos from Antibes, you have to see them in Antibes,” the master once said.

10. MUSÉE RENOIR

With its original canvases, sculptures and studio, this museum in Renoir’s former home, Les Collettes, offers a captivating glimpse into the creative world of the Impressionist master, who spent his final 12 years here.

11. MUSÉE INTERNATIONALE DE LA PARFUMERIE

As an insight into perfume-making over the past 300 years, this interactive museum in Grasse is indispensable. Housed in an 18th-century mansion, it has plenty of attractions for visitors of all ages.

12. VILLA EPHRUSSI DE ROTHSCHILD

On the neck of the Cap Ferrat peninsula, this Belle-Époque palace -built for Baroness Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild – houses art and artefacts from all over the world. The gardens are wonderful.
