The Rencontres d’Arles, the world-renowned international photography festival, returns for its 56th edition in 2025 with a vibrant and thought-provoking programme spread across the city’s iconic historic venues.

The spotlight is on First Nations and non-Indigenous Australian artists, with more than 200 works on show. Continuing its tradition of pushing the boundaries of photographic expression, this year the festival’s theme is Images indociles (Disobedient Images). Festival director Christoph Wiesner says the concept of commitment runs through the entire programme: “From Australia to Brazil, North America and the Caribbean, the world is shaken by the rise of nationalism, the rise of nihilism and environmental crises; the photographic perspectives offer an essential counterpoint to dominant discourses, celebrating the diversity of cultures, genders and origins.”

With extended dates and expanded hours, the 2025 edition aims to give visitors ample opportunities to explore the world of contemporary photography.
