What’s on Now in France: Nantes Museum Reopens

The famous Musée des Beaux-Arts in the beautiful and dynamic city of Nantes reopens on June 23 as the Musée d’Arts de Nantes after six years of extensive renovations. The total exhibition area of the much-loved institution has been increased by a third and every effort has been made to provide improved accessibility for the public.

The €89 million renovation, guided by the London-based architectural design practice Stanton Williams, was supposed to take just two years to complete, but various technical complications in its reconstruction have set the reopening date back to this summer.

The new facilities now have the capacity to exhibit 900 works spanning nine centuries of art history and, if the opening shows are any indication, we are in for a real treat. Nantes Métropole, the engine behind the renovation, promises a bold programme of temporary exhibitions to reopen the museum’s doors including shows by Bill Viola, Susanna Fritscher and Dominique Blais.
