5 Things to do in Bourges

Beyond the centre of Bourges are multiple options to see the city from an alternative perspective, so do allow time to explore.

1. LE LAC DUVAL D’AURON

Less than 2km from the town centre, this vast lake includes options for angling, sailing, rowing and canoeing. There’s plenty of green space, too, along with a lake beach, tennis, boules and volleyball courts.

2. LA CATHÉDRALE DE JEAN LINARD

An artistic creation on a grand scale and the work of one man, Jean Linard, who, having handmade the bricks, built himself a cathedral. The work of art, designated a Monument Historique, has a touch of Gaudí or Picasso about it. It’s near the village of La Borne, which is renowned for its pottery.

3. LES NUITS LUMIÈRE

Every summer from May to September, the city centre in Bourges is lit up with blue lights. Specific buildings, including the cathedral, are highlighted while a series of lights guides you on a walking circuit that takes in all the illuminated sights. It’s free to see.

4. CANAL DE BERRY BY BIKE

Crossing through the centre of Bourges is the Canal de Berry. A towpath allows traffic-free cycling from Plaimpied-Givaudins, south of the city, to Mehun-sur- Yevre in the north, a distance of 30km.

5. ROUTE JACQUES COEUR

Paying tribute to Bourges’ most famous son, this route links 18 sites and cities across the Cher department that have a connection to Jacques Coeur. It includes Menetou-Salon and Sancerre (both wine AOCs) and, in Bourges, the Palais Jacques Coeur.
