Here, France Today presents six irresistible themes to inspire your summer trip to Authentic Southwest…

1. AUTHENTIC SOUTHWEST HISTORY

Discover living history across Authentic Southwest’s enchanting collection of bastides and towns, where wandering quiet backstreets reveals layers of
character and beautifully preserved medieval architecture. Some are fortified, their neat chequerboard layouts radiating from central squares lined with covered walkways and elegant arcades. Enjoy wandering their little streets, called carrérots. Four standout towns demand your attention. In Auch, Gascony’s capital, the behemoth UNESCO-listed Sainte-Marie Cathedral dominates the central square, and don’t miss the statue of Musketeer d’Artagnan, Henri IV’s house and the Musée des Amériques. Then head to Montauban, a designated Town of Art and History. It is rich in architectural treasures, from the graceful arcades of the newly restored, restaurant-lined Place Nationale to its many works of street art and sculptures. In Agen, explore the atmospheric medieval quarter, with its half-timbered houses and arcaded Rue des Cornières, before admiring the grand Haussmann-style façades of Boulevard de la République. Another unmissable town is Moissac, home to a magnifi cent UNESCO-listed abbey and cloister, as well as a picturesque harbour – the perfect launch point for a leisurely cruise along the Canal de Garonne. On a smaller scale, Authentic Southwest boasts a wealth of irresistible bastides, including the hilltop beauty Lauzerte and other offi cially designated Plus Beaux Villages de France, Montréal-du-Gers and Monfl anquin. For a deeper dive, map out an itinerary linking these with other standout villages such as Auvillar, Bruniquel, Fourcès, La Romieu, Larressingle, Lavardens, Penne d’Agenais, Pujols, Sarrant, Tournon d’Agenais and Villeréal.

2. AUTHENTIC SOUTHWEST FLAVOURS

Nature’s tasty bounty is revered in these parts. From Agen’s famed prune producers to artisans crafting esteemed AOP ham from Gascon and Noir de
Bigorre pigs, Authentic Southwest is a feast for the taste buds. Add to that growers of fragrant Gariguette strawberries (already abundant in May)
and farmers rearing ducks for rich regional classics such as confit de canard, and it’s clear this is a destination made for bon viveurs. Visitors are warmly welcomed for tastings and behind-the-scenes visits, with the chance to buy exceptional produce direct, or gather supplies at local markets. Look out too for Lomagne IGP white garlic, the aforementioned juicy gems Chasselas de Moissac grapes, Marmande tomatoes and sweet Quercy IGP melons. For a refined dining experience, book a table at one of the Michelin-starred restaurants in Pujaudran, Puylausic or Moirax.

Wine enthusiasts will love it here: delve into a rich viticultural landscape with appellations such as Fronton, Coteaux du Quercy, Côtes de Gascogne, Saint-Mont, Brulhois, Côtes du Marmandais, Côtes de Duras, MadiranPacherenc and Vins de Buzet offering plenty of tasting and take-home opportunities. Meanwhile, spirit lovers shouldn’t miss a visit to an Armagnac AOP producer to enjoy on-site tastings of France’s oldest brandy and pop a bottle or two into your suitcase.

3. AUTHENTIC SOUTHWEST CULTURE

The cultural calendar here is as vibrant as the landscape, with an eclectic array of festivals offering a lively way to experience the region’s traditions. Whether your tastes lean towards jazz, medieval pageantry, stylish headwear or Latin rhythms, there’s always something worth planning a trip around.

Each summer, Marciac transforms into a world-class open-air jazz venue, drawing major names to the Gers countryside – with artists including Sting, Pat Metheny and Kenny Garrett performing this July. In Caussade, the Estivales du Chapeau celebrates the town’s hat-making heritage, inviting visitors to admire – and even create – their own chapeaux.

Step back in time at Monflanquin’s Fêtes Médiévales, where minstrels, knights and merchants recreate the colour and energy of the Middle Ages. Or head to Vic-Fezensac for Tempo Latino, a high-spirited celebration of salsa, samba and merengue, complete with buzzing bars and stalls serving regional fare. Art lovers are equally well served.

The beautifully restored Abbaye de Beaulieu-en-Rouergue and the Cistercian Abbaye de Flaran house collections spanning the 16th to 20th centuries, including works by Rubens, Cézanne and Renoir. In Montauban, the Musée Ingres Bourdelle showcases masterpieces by two of the town’s most celebrated fi gures, while Le Jardin des Nénuphars is the world’s oldest aquatic nursery. It inspired Monet and houses the National Water Lily Collection.

4. AUTHENTIC SOUTHWEST EXPERIENCES

To truly connect with the region, spend time with the market traders and artisans who keep its traditions alive. Market days are a sensory delight, fi lled
with vibrant colours, aromas and lively conversation. Head to Samatan on a Monday for its renowned poultry and duck produce, or browse beneath the
medieval hall in Villeréal on Saturdays. On Sunday mornings, Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val hosts one of the region’s most celebrated markets, with stalls spilling through its winding streets.

In summer, villages such as Lauzerte, Lectoure and Nérac take on a magical atmosphere as night markets glow under strings of lights – after browsing, why not enjoy a meal en plein air in a jolly communal atmosphere? Finally, for a closer look at local craftsmanship, visit workshops where traditional skills endure – from the hat-makers of Caussade to artisans working with Bleu de Lectoure woad, and the ceramicists of Atelier des Loys in Villeréal.
