French Film Review: Le Comte de Monte-Cristo
This latest remake of Alexandre Dumas’ classic novel transports us to Marseille in 1815, where bright young Edmond Dantès is on the verge of seeing his dreams come true. Recently promoted to ship’s captain, he is set to marry the love of his life, Mercedes. But his rise to glory breeds jealousy and resentment and his rivals conspire against him, falsely accusing him of being part of a pro-Bonaparte plot. Without trial, he is thrown into the infamous Château d’if, a seemingly inescapable prison, with no hope of release. Fourteen years later, he makes a daring escape and, having uncovered hidden treasure on the island of Monte Cristo, he begins an elaborate plan to exact his revenge.
