On Ecoute (encore)…Thomas Dutronc
French Musical royalty troubadour returns with a new album.
We last showcased the tunes of 51-year-old Thomas Dutronc whose mother, Françoise Hardy, passed away last June four years ago when he released a covers album, entitled Frenchy. It featured French songs, recorded in collaboration with a number of renowned international artists and musicians, including Iggy Pop. A couple of years later, he teamed up with his father, legendary singer Jacques Dutronc, for an album and tour, both critically well received.
Now he is back with a new studio record, Il n’est jamais trop tard (It’s Never Too Late). A low-key easy-listen in his trademark chanson style with jazz manouche, it features bright melodies, lots of acoustic guitar noodling, plus lyrics veering from uplifting to nostalgic (he recently told francetvinfo “I’m a little boy who lost his mother. I think that at any age, you become a little boy again”). French critics have called the album his best yet. We agree, which is why this hugely enjoyable long-player instantly made its way into France Today’s top 10 releases of the year. Dutronc will be heading out on tour around France from February 2025.
