On Ecoute…Clara Luciani

On Ecoute…Clara Luciani

France’s coolest pop star is back with a new album.

Born in Martigues (Bouches-du-Rhône) in 1992, Clara Luciani began her musical career in decidedly rock fashion with the group La Femme. After all, her inspiration growing up came partly from the angsty, angular output of the Pixies, Nico, PJ Harvey, Patti Smith and Sonic Youth. But she also references Françoise Hardy, Serge Gainsbourg, Michel Legrand and Paul McCartney as early influences, which all point to her melodic gifts, delivered with a rich vocal depth and a seriously cool stage presence.

However, her breakout single had a decidedly disco feel. La Grenade, released in 2018, is a latter-day French classic, with a brilliantly catchy chorus. It had notched up a whopping 88m streams on Spotify alone as we went to press. The song serves as a perfect introduction to her oeuvre, but Luciani’s compositions and lyrical content have evolved since then her latest album, Mon Sang (My Blood) is more introspective, a personal take on motherhood – not just her relationship with her own mother but also her new role as a mother (she had a child with husband Alex Kapranos, of Franz Ferdinand, in 2023). She is on tour throughout 2025.
