The European Heritage Days in France
The Journées du Patrimoine, also known as Heritage Days, is an annual event that celebrates France’s rich culture and history. Many historical sites, museums and monuments across France open their doors to the public, offering a unique glimpse into the country’s past.
This 41st edition promises to be an unforgettable experience with the themes of ‘routes, networks and connections’ and ‘maritime heritage’. This will include transport (stations, airports, ports), moveable heritage (locomotives, aeroplanes, cars, boats), connections (aerials, satellite dishes, radar) and highlights cultural practices such as transhumance.
When it comes to maritime heritage, it includes ports, the lighthouses that mark the coasts of mainland France and the French overseas territories, ships such as the legendary three-masted Belem, which carried the Olympic flame to France this year, plus maritime museums, seaside architecture and the world of underwater archaeology. France has the second-largest maritime area in the world, so it’s a chance to explore maritime issues, from shipbuilding and aquaculture techniques to the traditions of sea festivals. Whether you’re interested in art, history, or architecture, there’s something for everyone during this annual celebration.
