The First Retrospective Exhibition on Tarsila do Amaral in France

The pioneering Brazilian artist Tarsila do Amaral (1886-1973) is the subject of an exhibition at the Musée du Luxembourg, the first retrospective of her vibrant and influential work to be held in France.

Born in São Paulo in 1886, Amaral played a crucial role in shaping Brazilian Modernism. Her artistic journey took her from Brazil to Paris, where she studied under renowned artists and absorbed the avant-garde movements of the early 20th century. Upon returning to Brazil, she fused these European influences with her native cultural heritage, creating a unique language that celebrated Brazilian identity. At the same time, Amaral was aware of the paradox of representing ‘authentic’ Brazil while being a white, aristocratic, cosmopolitan woman, a dimension that adds social identity and a race layer to her point of view and invites us to reflect between learned and popular cultures. This retrospective featuring more than 150 works looks at Amaral’s rich creation in which brightly-coloured landscapes with clear lines alternate with dreamlike, mysterious and fascinating visions in a rare opportunity to discover lesser-known aspects of the artist’s career.
