5 Gems of the Perigord Region

1. ROCAMADOUR

A place of legend and history, the extraordinary village of Rocamadour is perched on the side of a limestone cliff. Legend has it that in 1166, an incorruptible body was found buried where the Sanctuary now stands. Since then, Rocamadour has become an important pilgrimage site. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1979.

2. PADIRAC

Full of extraordinary rock formations, the Padirac caves have a subterranean river system where visitors embark on a riverboat ride 110 yards below the surface. Considered one of the most extraordinary natural phenomena of the region, the Gouffre de Padirac is also the largest natural heritage site in Europe.

3. SARLAT

With its cobblestone lanes and beautifully preserved medieval buildings, Sarlat is a spectacular example of 14th-century France. Developed around a large Benedictine abbey of Carolingian origin, its historic center was added to France’s possible list for future nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002.

4. PRE-HISTORIC CAVES OF THE VÉZÈRE VALLEY

The Prehistoric Sites and Decorated Caves of the Vézère Valley have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. There are 15 prehistoric sites listed in the region, mostly in and around Les Eyzies, which is widely known as the “Capital of Prehistory”. Two of the most spectacular sites are Lascaux and Font-de-Gaume.

5. 1001 CASTLES

Whether you prefer imposing medieval fortresses or Renaissance castles with their classic French gardens, there is a plethora of castles to visit in the Perigord region. Most were built during the 100-years-war, and some of the most spectacular include Hautefort, Losse, and Puymartin, all painstakingly restored to their original beauty.

About Us

SLL Perigord Travel was started by a Frenchman whose family has owned a castle in Perigord since 1764 and his wife, a sixth-generation Texan who moved to France in her 20’s. Their combined love for the region led to their desire to share it with people who, though they may already know Paris, have yet to experience the remarkable beauty and rich history of this exceptional corner of France.
