Sélestat, in Alsace, is giving pride of place to traditions around the Christmas tree.

Les boules de Noël de Meisenthal font joujou” exhibition.

The Humanist Library of Sélestat is hosting a Christmas exhibition on the theme of childhood, the annual theme chosen by the city for its festive season. This year, the exhibition combines toys and games with Christmas baubles from Meisenthal by recreating small scenes with a playful and quirky tone. Designer Amandine Louise will adorn the exhibition with illustrations.

Tuesday to Sunday: 10am-12.30pm / 1.30pm-6pm. Closed Mondays and December 26. Free access (admission to museum charged)

“1521: the tradition of the Christmas tree” exhibition.

Just inside the lobby of the Humanist Library, an exhibition traces back the first mention ever of a Christmas tree. And guess what? It was first mentioned in Sélestat. The famous account book from 1521, along with two more recent accounts of the Christmas tree tradition (1555 and 1600), are on display during the festive season.

Tuesday to Sunday: 10am-12.30pm / 1.30pm-6pm. Closed Mondays and December 26. Free admission (museum admission charged)

Christmas at the Maison du Pain d’Alsace 

Enjoy Christmas at the Maison du Pain d’Alsace! A stone’s throw from the Humanist Library, the Maison du Pain d’Alsace welcomes visitors to experience the history of bread in a unique place. The bakers are ready to stir all the senses: special breads, kougelhopfs, pretzels, aniseed bread, bredle are produced and baked on the spot. Hands-on dough activities for young and old are offered all year round. A tea room and a terrace complete the experience for a truly tasty moment in Sélestat.

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday: 9am-6pm. Tuesday and Friday: 9am-6.30pm ; December 24: 8:30am to 3pm – Closed December 25 and 26.
