Paris Exhibition Highlights Treasures from Gaza
L’Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris offers an extraordinary journey through 5,000 years of Gaza’s history.
Showcasing 130 archaeological masterpieces, the exhibition draws from a larger collection of 529 works that have been safeguarded in Geneva since 2007. These artefacts – ranging from Bronze Age amphorae and Canaanite pottery to Byzantine mosaics, Greco-Roman statues and Islamic jewellery – reveal Gaza’s role as a vital crossroads of civilisations, linking Asia, Africa and the Mediterranean. Highlights include the stunning Abu Barakeh mosaic and rare pieces from the private collection of Jawdat Khoudary, presented for the first time in France.
The exhibition not only celebrates Gaza’s rich and diverse heritage but also draws urgent attention to the threats facing this legacy due to conflict, urban development and looting. Through immersive displays and expert-guided tours, visitors can gain a non-partisan, deeply informative perspective on Gaza’s historical significance and the ongoing struggle to preserve its cultural identity.
