Azay-le-Rideau Celebrates its Half Millenium

To celebrate 500 years since its construction, Azay-le-Rideau, a stand-out among France’s Valley of Kings, is being brought to life with an exciting programme of summer events.
Set in the heart of the picturesque, UNESCO-listed Loire Valley, Azay-le-Rideau castle is considered one of the finest examples of France’s first. Renaissance architectural wave. Its story begins in the early 16th century when Gilles Berthelot, the financier for Francis I, envisioned a magnificent residence for himself. Construction of the castle began on the site of an old fortress, and the chateau came to embody the transition from medieval fortresses to the elegant and ornate Renaissance architectural style, drawing inspiration from Italy for some of its decorative elements.
In later years, the château passed through the hands of several owners, each adding their own touches to its architectural splendour: it’s the 19th-century restoration works and additions that gave the castle the appearance we know today. In 1905, it was bought by the State and put under the care of the Centre des monuments nationaux. Over 310,000 visitors ambled through its beautiful galleries and gardens in 2024.
